Networking is also known as LAN, WAN, and now also WLAN Technology:

LAN stands for Local Area Network, which is usually all connected to the central point of a private network.

WAN stands for Wide Area Networks, which are mainly used by ISPs.

WLAN stands for Wireless Local Area Network which carries your connections wirelessly when in range.

Another form of Networking is VPNs which are Virtual Private Networks. This connects TWO devices or LAN's together that are not on the same network.

ISPs can also provide phone service to the network using Voice over Internet Protocol(VoIP).
